Early Black Bishops in 19th Century America
A Comprehensive Study of Faith, Leadership, and Liberation
This rigorous academic course provides an in-depth examination of the pioneering Black bishops who shaped American Christianity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through careful historical analysis, theological reflection, and biographical study, students will explore how these remarkable leaders navigated the intersection of faith, racial oppression, and institutional power to create enduring religious institutions that served as cornerstones of African American life.
What Students Will Learn
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
Historical Knowledge
Identify and analyze the major Black bishops of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including Richard Allen, James Varick, William Henry Miles, James Augustine Healy, Charles Harrison Mason, Charles Price Jones, William J. Seymour, and William E. Fuller Sr.
Explain the historical context of 19th century America, including slavery, the Second Great Awakening, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Great Migration
Trace the development of independent Black denominations including the AME Church, AME Zion Church, CME Church, National Baptist Convention, Church of God in Christ, and Church of Christ (Holiness) USA
Understand the challenges these leaders faced, including racial discrimination, limited access to education, violent opposition, and systemic barriers to ecclesiastical authority.
